“Women will have achieved true equality when men share with them the responsibility of bringing up the next generation.” – Ruth Bader Ginsburg
This post is going to be a little different than our regularly scheduled programming. I first want to take a quick minute to acknowledge that I am a Feminist raising a son to also be a Feminist. Not only like me, but also like his father and the many people in his every day life. We have an obligation to teach our daughters to be whomever and whatever they want, despite that society tells them otherwise. We also have an obligation to raise our sons the same. This world is not going to tell my son that he can’t cry because boys don’t cry. This world is not going to tell my son that he can’t play with makeup because only girls wear makeup. This world is not going to tell my son that because he’s a boy he must play the sports instead of cheering for them. This list could go on for hours… His dad and I will teach him that he can be whomever he wants, as long as that person is kind, respectful, and happy. We will teach him that as a man he will most likely be faced with advantages that his female friends will not be afforded, and for that he must always be an ally.
In this post, on this day, we’re going to focus on the many women that have come before us and paved the way. The many women who have picketed, marched, fought, screamed, cried, and grit their teeth and smiled through this world to get us to where we are and continue to do so. On this day I celebrate them. I celebrate us.
And to the women in my life: I see you, I hear you, I am inspired by you. ✊🏼
Until next time…
